Ky. school has iPad program for younger grades
Although more typically seen in middle and high schools, one Kentucky elementary school is using iPads with some second- and third-grade students. Teachers, who support the initiative, say they are using the tablet computers across all subjects and have formed an informal professional-learning community to share best practices. T.H.E. Journal
Empowering female students to pursue STEM subjects
About 200 female students from middle and high schools in and around Bucks County, Pa., took part in the Girls in Focus on Technology — or GIFT — Day, a seminar aimed at boosting their interest in science, technology, engineering and math. Female professionals in STEM fields attended the event, where students participated in sessions that included hands-on science experiments and technology lessons. The Intelligencer (Doylestown, Pa.)
More schools and educators are using technology to customize lessons and learning for individual students. Examples include special assessments that are based on students’ strengths and weaknesses, data-driven lesson plans and assignments, and hands-on technology projects that fulfill curriculum requirements. However, experts say definitions are still evolving about what personalized learning means and how it is best used to improve achievement and inspire lifelong learning. A new program at a Delaware high school will combine technology with project-based learning strategies. The program will incorporate iPods and mobile phones into lessons teaching workplace skills as well as traditional subjects. It is based on the New Tech Network model created in 1996 and in place at 60 high schools across the country. The News Journal (Wilmington, Del.)
